Our current focus is on helping Nurbuling school fund a qualified English teacher and improve their school facilities.

This fundraiser will feature images and videos captured by two of our volunteers, Elley Ho and Scott Taylor who worked at 3 different village schools in Nepal last summer. They will be there to share stories about their experiences teaching/documenting lives of these children. Dessert and drinks are available for purchase at the event.

Elley, now a board member of NEIO, is excited to be working with many sponsors, including Sophie Lai of Simply Perfect Weddings & Events. Sophie has been of immense help in gathering resources and making this fundraiser happen. We’ve gathered more than 25 sponsors to sponsor a variety of attractive prizes that will be drawn throughout the day of the event. It gives us immense joy to finally to see the initial dream of the Nurbuling school as a real structure. The team has been working hard around various issues for over the past three months, and the project is almost complete. Political interference, strikes that prevent traveling, hikes in the prices of fuel and construction materials were some of the challenges overcome by our team. All the building standards have been met and the school has become the first earthquake proof building in the village. All the credit for this goes to our vounteers, supporters, and the local Nurbuliung community.

Join us on April 30, 2011 at Tin Restaurant (937 Howard Street between 5th and 6th Street) from 5 – 8 PM for an evening of laughter and drinks in support of a good cause. NEIO is completing our second school, Nurbuling School, after successfully completing our first school, Nakote School.

Tin Restaurant has generously donated their time and space. All proceeds from the bar will benefit NEIO.

The Nurbuling School, established in 1991, serves as the only source of education for pre-school to eighth grade in the Kharka village in Nepal’s Himalayan valleys.

The Nurbuling School serves as the only source of formal education for the Hyolmos community of Kharka Dandha, Nepal. The Hyolmos, an indigenous ethnic minority group, has been recorded to occupy the Nepali Himalayan region north of Katmandu over eight centuries ago. Kharka Dandha located in the distant foothills of the Himalayan regions. This involves a six hour bus ride from Kathmandu and another three hour hike from the nearest accessible road.

The peripheral village of Kharka Dandha resided a limited number of remaining indigenous Hyolmo communities which usually fails to meet the bare essential living standard of running water or electricity.

The school benefits over 100 students within the village population of 750 where half of the village population is under the age of 18.
